They’re a perfect dessert for almost any occasion and easy to put together. You can use a boxed cake mix like we did or from scratch up to you. We obviously went with a box cake mix for simplicity and you can also use store bought frosting or you can make your own like our cream cheese frosting or cocoa buttercream would be a yummy choice too!
All you have to do is frost the top of the cupcake, add Oreo pieces and finish with the m&ms for the eyes and nose! That’s it, so easy peasy you and the kiddos will love making these.
Alternatives for m&ms for the “eyes & beak” for the Oreo Owl Cupcake
You can use any of the following for the eyes and beak instead of m&ms
- Junior Mints for the eyes
- Chocolate Chips (with the flat side up)
- Smarties for my fellow Canadians & those in the UK
- Junior Mints
- Jelly Belly Jelly Beans
- Candy Corn or Harvest Corn for the beak
Do I have to use regular Oreos?
As you can see my owls are brown but once again you’ve got choices people. You can use any Oreos you want to. Birthday cake, Mint, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Lemon and I think you get the idea. You also could have a lot of fun and use bright colors, who says that your owls can’t be pink, blue or purple? If you have kids I’m sure they could be very creative.
Can I prepare these owl cupcakes ahead of time?
You can make the cupcakes and frost them but you will want to wait until a few hours before you serve them to add the owl decorations.
How do I store the cupcakes?
To store the Oreo Owl Cupcakes, you can place them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
If you want to freeze the cupcakes I recommend you do it without the Owl decorations. You can freeze them for up to 3 months. Here’s how to freeze them:
- Make sure the cupcakes have cooled completely before freezing.
- Place the cupcakes in a single layer in an airtight container. If you need to stack the cupcakes, separate the layers with a sheet of wax paper or parchment paper to prevent them from sticking together.
- Seal the container and label it with the date.
- Place the container in the freezer.
- When you’re ready to eat the cupcakes, remove them from the freezer and let them thaw at room temperature for about 2-3 hours.

Easy Oreo Owl Cupcakes
These Oreo Owl Cupcakes are not only adorable but they are easy to put together, dare we say it's a hoot to make them? All kidding aside, if you're not a cupcake decorating pro (because I'm not) that's okay because almost anyone can make these cute cupcakes.
Ingredients
Cupcakes
- 1 box chocolate cake mix (follow instructions on box but below is what we used)
- 1 box instant chocolate pudding mix
- 1/2 cup (118ml) unsalted butter, melted
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup (236ml) chocolate milk
Decoration
- 1 cup (236ml) dark chocolate frosting
- Orange and brown m&m’s
- 12-15 double stuff Oreos for the eyes, plus 8 more for the eyebrows
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C)
Line a muffin tin with cupcake liners.
!Feel free to just follow the instructions of your cake mix box, you can skip the instant pudding.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the instant cake mix and instant pudding mix.
Add melted butter, eggs, and chocolate milk to the bowl, and mix until the batter is smooth and well combined.
Fill the cupcake liners about 2/3 full with the batter.
Bake the cupcakes for about 15-18 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a cupcake comes out clean.
Remove the cupcakes from the oven and let them cool for a few
minutes in the muffin tin.
Transfer the cupcakes to a wire rack to cool completely before frosting and serving.
Frost your cupcakes. Once the cupcakes are cool, frost them using a knife, icing spatula or piping bag.
To create the owl eyes, gently press two Oreo semicircles into the frosting on each cupcake, with the filling sides facing up.
Place an m&m in the center of each Oreo semicircle, pressing it gently into the frosting. You may need to use a bit of frosting on each m&m to get it to stick to the white Oreo filling.
Snap another cookie half in two to form the eyebrows of the owls and stick them into the frosting.
For the beak, take an orange m&m and press it into the frosting below the owl eyes.
Repeat these steps for each cupcake until you have a full batch of adorable owl cupcakes
