Joyful Pets that Teach Kids Easy Responsibility

We all know pets can be a big responsibility, and one we want to teach our kids. But as parents, we all know how so many times that kids give up and everything falls to us, the parents. African dwarf frogs had never even crossed my mind. I’m sure they normally would for anyone else as well. However, my kids and I have learned what joyful pets these are and while they promote responsibility, they are actually very easy to care for.

Not a Fan of the Scaley and Slimy?

I must admit I’m not overly fond of the world of reptile and amphibians. I’ve come to respect them. I even think some are quite beautiful, but the idea of having them as a pet scared me. I don’t want to handle them! Luckily Froggy’s Lair made it easy to set up our frogs’ habitat. And once they are in their tank, they never have to leave. They are really quite small and I think they are pretty darn cute, too.

Easy Maintenance, Easy Responsibility

Froggy’s Lair provides a layer of moist sand that goes at the very bottom of the tank. The sand is full of two types of bacteria that convert all the waste from the frog and food and anything else into nitrates that help feed the bamboo plant in the tank. The only thing the plant gives off after consuming the nitrates is beneficial oxygen. My kids learned this is the nitrogen cycle and keeps the tank and the frogs healthy. We simply feed the frogs twice per week. We change a portion, maybe a cupful, of the water every two weeks or change 50% of the water once every 2-3 months.

Since we got our two sets of frogs my kids have learned all about them. Not only do they care for them, feeding them twice per week, but have learned about the nitrogen cycle, about how plants grow, about the frogs, where they come from, and how they live. We have not got brave enough to hold them yet, but you can hold them for a few minutes outside of the water. We just don’t want them jumping away. They can only survive out of the water for around 15-20 minutes before they dry out and die. We learned how to determine if we have male or female frogs and found out we have three girls and one boy. We think. They are very small and quick to dart around in the water. 

Screen-Free Entertainment

These frogs crack me up. They like to live on the bottom of the tank but have to dart up for quick breaths of air every once in a while. They also love to do this thing where they just spread their arms and legs out as far as they will go and float slowly to the top. It just looks so funny! But it is something we learned that this species of frog loves to do. It is fun to just sit and watch them for any length of time. They sit on the corner of our dining room table, so the kids love watching them while they eat dinner. 

Joyful Pets I Never Thought I Would Love

I really never saw myself willingly owning an amphibian pet, but I love these little frogs from Froggy’s Lair. The kids enjoy them and they more often than not remind me what days to feed them and take care of them. They love doing it too! They count out the food pellets and make sure they are fed properly. And we all just love watching them bounce around their tanks. They are so much fun and SO easy to take care of. We are now proud frog owners.
